What we do
The Belmont Food Collaborative began in 2009, and has a number of projects to help achieve our mission:
- Belmont Farmers’ Market Our biggest project is the Farmers’ Market, running since 2006. It’s a great community event, with entertainment, information, and a broad range of fresh, local food. The Market is open on Thursday afternoons from June to October in Belmont Center. More at the Belmont Farmers’ Market website.
- Food Assistance We help local families get fresh food in many ways: we match SNAP benefits ( Food Stamps), and coupons for WIC (moms & babies) and FMNP (seniors). We also work with Boston Area Gleaners, and the Belmont Food Pantry, and our Community Growing project teaches people how to grow their own produce.
- Belmont Composts! Our goal is to reduce Belmont’s trash by increasing curbside composting. More at the Belmont Composts! website.
- Community Growing This was originally a way to grow produce for the Belmont Food Pantry. It developed into a program to help people in the community learn to grow their own food, whether at home or at the Rock Meadow gardens.
- Education Committee The Committee runs a variety of food-related programs, including speakers and cooking classes (because the best way to eat well is to cook).
