Job Description
Belmont Food Collaborative Treasurer
Role Overview
Make a difference in our community as our new volunteer treasurer. Working with a board of enthusiastic community volunteers, you’ll help ensure that the Belmont Food Collaborative (BFC) has the financial stability and resources to support programs that improve the lives of people in Belmont and surrounding communities.
Through its subgroups (the Belmont Farmers’ Market and Belmont Helps), BFC provides tens of thousands of dollars in food assistance annually, helps children and adults learn about the local food system, and helps make Belmont a better place to live, learn, and eat.
As treasurer, you will work closely with the bookkeeper (a new position), the board, and the chairs of the Belmont Farmers’ Market (BFM) and Belmont Helps (BH).
The treasurer provides financial oversight and guidance to BFC, a registered 501(c)(3), ensuring that the organization’s finances are accurate, well-managed, transparent, and aligned with its mission and board-approved budget.

Key Responsibilities
As treasurer, you will join the BFC board, and oversee the overall financial health of BFC and its subgroups. In addition, you will:
Help define a new bookkeeper role, and help with hiring.
Develop and monitor the annual budget, and review financial performance against it.
Review monthly financial reports, reconciliations, and other financial information prepared by the bookkeeper.
Present clear financial updates and recommendations to the board.
Provide oversight of banking, credit cards, payroll (one paid employee), fundraising, payment platforms, and subgroup finances. Oversee vendor reimbursements and other food assistance transactions during the BFM season, as well as BH year-round food assistance.
Ensure that we have appropriate financial controls, documentation, and separation of duties.
Prepare and file required federal 990 and Massachusetts Public Charities forms, working with the bookkeeper as appropriate.
Review and renew insurance policies, which include Directors and Officers, General Liability, and Workers Compensation.
Serve as the board’s financial resource and support long-term planning and sustainability.
Work with the bookkeeper to identify and resolve discrepancies or financial concerns.
Process Improvement & Automation
A key priority for the treasurer will be to evaluate and streamline BFC’s current financial processes. Working with the bookkeeper and board, this includes reviewing current use of QuickBooks, payment and payroll software, and other systems. New processes should be sustainable and efficient, and easy for future staff to maintain.
Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a financially knowledgeable, organized, and collaborative individual who can provide sound financial oversight and communicate financial information clearly to the board. Nonprofit, accounting, finance, or budgeting experience is preferred.
We strongly prefer candidates who are local and able to engage with the organization in person as needed. However, we will also consider qualified candidates who can fulfill the role virtually.
The time commitment will vary based on updates to current processes. With well-designed new processes, the new treasurer should expect to spend about five hours per week.
